Our 2015 Show Report

The Cornish Dahlia Society’s mini show held at Trelawney Garden Centre at the kind invitation of the Blue Diamond Garden Centre Group was well supported by members from the far spread corners of the county.

Most Points, runner-up Best Exhibit and the Bowl class which was voted for by 190 members of the public was won by Roy Knight.

The Best exhibit a very tidy Cream Capella was grown outdoors and staged by Terry Stephens. David Jasper was runner-up to most points in show.

The main show was held over the three days of the August Bank Holiday week-end and staged once again in the old stables of Trelissick House by kind invitation of The National Trust. This year, because of the way the calendar worked out, there being 5 weekends in August our friends from across the border in Devon had a show of their own so they were unable to come down to join us.

The judge, Mr Manfred Roper from Yeovil awarded the NDS Silver medal to Terry Stephens for a vase of Deborah’s Kiwi and also the Bronze medal for Jomanda. Terry had his best show ever at CDS shows winning The Cornish Championship with Cream Capella, Deborah’s Kiwi, Mary’s Jomanda, and Weston Pirate. Terry went on to win the Giant/Large Decorative trophy with Sir Alf Ramsey, Cream Alva’s and John Hill, the Medium Decorative with Charlie 2 and White Charlie 2. The Giant/Large Cactus with 3 Pink Jupiter and the Ball trophy using Blyton Softer Gleam (small ball) and Mary’s Jomanda (mini ball). Terry’s vase of Deborah’s Kiwi won the trophy for the best exhibit and best vase of small cactus and the best vase in show, to cap a very successful day he won best exhibit in the specimen bloom section with Hillcrest Candy.

Miniature cactus specialist Peter Greenway won the trophy class with 2 seedlings Josudi Pegasus and Josudi Andromeda. Roy Knight’s successful season continued with wins in the Pompon class 2 vases of Moor Place and 1 of Josudi Carol, Most points in the members classes, Best vase small decs and the new Ron Grant Memorial trophy for the best vase of Pompons.

The bowl class voted for by 429 visitors over the three days was won by Roy Knight using a selection of Collerette seedlings.

Speaking of Collerettes the “Kernow King of the Collerette”, Mike Bryant again staged an eye catching display of these blooms, garden visitors to the show are fascinated by their simple charm. Mike won the new class for any 7 blooms in a vase, the Collerette trophy the Cornish Seedling Trophy class and the single bloom seedling.

David Jasper won the 9 cultivar x single bloom class using Jomanda, Blyton Softer Gleam, Mary’s Jomanda, Marston George and 5 seedlings. The Cornish Miniature Championship class with a seedling mini dec, a seedling mini cactus and Mary’s Jomanda mini ball. The Miniature Dec trophy 2 x seedling and Marston George and the Waterlily trophy using Taratahi Ruby and Bracken Ballerina was also won by the Chairman.

We welcomed two new Novice exhibitors to the shows, Stuart Inch won both trophies in the Novice section, the Best Exhibit with a very creditable vase of Weston Spanish Dancer and the Most Points trophy. A delighted Peter Clifford won a closely fought battle in the Single Bloom classes to gain Most Points.

A BIG Thank You to Pat and Mike especially for “setting up” Trelissick on Friday, being on duty all 3 days and for “setting up” Trelawney on Saturday together with John. Thanks also all Committee members and to Pete and Mo for helping to make the shows such a success.
