Our 2016 Show Report

The Cornish Dahlia Society Mini show held at Trelawney Garden & Leisure, by kind invitation and much help from the management and staff of Blue Diamond was again a great success with many of the garden centre’s customers showing amazement at the vast range of types of Dahlia. There is the simple single flower and Collerette, then the intricate petal formation of the tiny Pompon to the rugged (some would say ragged) enormous size of the Giants and every size and form in between.

Second best exhibit in show was awarded to Roy Knight with a vase of three Cherwell Skylark. The Bowl of Dahlias class, which is voted for by the public, was won by Pat Knight (Bowl B) with 53 votes from a total of 157.

Thanks to Nigel Williams, Head of Department, Trelawney Garden Centre who kindly presented the trophies. Other prize card winners were: Adrian Full, Che Stephenson, Clarence Thomas, David Lumb, John Colling, Julie Inch, Lorraine Jasper, Luke Wilson, Mike Bryant, Nathan Mitchell, Peter Greenway and Stuart Inch.

Thanks to Pat Knight, Mike Bryant, Simon Nute and John Colling for setting up the staging on the Saturday morning and to all who helped clear up after the show. It was good to see a few new faces having a go at showing as it was beginning to look a bit thin on the show benches as the “old timers” were starting to slow down. A big welcome to two new exhibitors showing with us for the first time, well done to Nathan and Che (assisted by his mum Cat).

The main three-day show held at Trelissick Gardens over the August Bank Holiday, at the invitation of The National Trust attracted a very good number of entries in the members one vase classes and the specimen bloom classes but the multi vase trophy classes were rather disappointing.

The Cornish Open Championship class had 4 entries as did the Waterlily class but most of the other trophy classes had one or maybe two entries. There is a great opportunity for some of our newer members to perhaps target a few classes and grow mainly for selected classes.

A NDS Silver medal was awarded to John Patrick for best exhibit in show (Weston Pirate and Ryecroft Pixie) and a NDS Bronze medal for second best exhibit in show (with vases of Sir Alf Ramsey, Deborahs Kiwi, Westerton Southside and Marston George). This exhibit also won John the Cornish Open Championship. John’s continued his success with winning The Karsalan Challenge Cup (Deborah’s Kiwi, Marion Storet and Ryecroft Jan) and The Eileen Boswell Trophy for the Miniature Cactus Class (Weston Pirate and Ryecroft Pixie). John also won the Best Vase of Poms and the Ray Adley Trophy for Best Vase in Show (Weston Pirate and Ryecroft Pixie).

The Harold Wilkinson Memorial Trophy (Open Ball Class) was won by Roy Knight (Blyton Softer Gleam and Lottie H). Roy also won The Pompon Trophy (Diane Gregory, Noreen and Willos Night), The Ivor Kitchener Trophy (Waterlilly Class with Kernow Redruth) and the most points in Section C – Members Classes. Roy also won the trophy for the best vase of Small Decorative in Show (Ryecroft Brenda T).

David Jasper won The Cornish Miniature Championship Trophy and The Clarence Ellis Memorial Trophy (Marston George, Marys Jomanda, Jomanda, Blyton Softer Gleam and 2 seedlings). David also won The Cyril Watkins Trophy (Small Decorative Class with Polventon Kristobel).

Terry Stephens won two CDS Trophies for the Large/Giant Decorative Class (Fairway Spur) and Large/Giant Cactus Class (Pink Jupiter).

The Cornish Seedling Trophy was won by Mike Bryant.

The Trengilly Trophy was won by David Lumb (White Charlie and Charlie 2) and he also won the Best Vase of Small Cactus in Show (Kiwi Gloria).

The best single bloom in Section E was won by Clarence Thomas (Jomanda) and Clarence also won the trophy for the most points in Section E Single Bloom Classes and the Best Vase of Small Semi-Cactus in Show (Oakwood Goldcrest).

Young Che Stephenson, exhibiting for the first time at an affiliated Dahlia Show and aged only 8 won the Penhill Trophy – Small Cactus Class (Kiwi Gloria and Deborahs Kiwi), also the best exhibit and the most points in the Novice Section. Che’s best exhibit was for a vase of Karen Glen.

Finally, the bowl class which is judged by the public was won by Pat Knight for exhibit B with 49 votes out of the total of 194 on the first day. Exhibit E which was also entered by Pat won on days two and three with 117 votes from the two days out of a total of 533 votes.

Other Prize Card winners were Adrian Full, Ivor Kitchener, Julie Inch, Luke Wilson, Nathan Mitchell, Peter Clifford and Stuart Inch. Congratulations and thanks to everyone that entered.

Thanks once again to Pat Knight and Mike Bryant for setting up on the Friday and for being on duty all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Thank you also to the judges: Ian Odgers, John Patrick and David Brown; and their stewards and everyone else that helped to make the show such a success. A hardworking team of members ensured the site was cleared in record time Monday evening at the end of the show.
